How AI assistants decide whether to recommend your business

Practical steps to make a small business findable and quotable by AI assistants and AI search: clear facts, structured data, machine-readable content and consistent details.

A growing share of buyers now ask an assistant before they search, and the assistant answers from whatever it can read and verify. That changes what a small business website has to do: it must be readable by machines, factually explicit, and easy to quote without hedging.

None of this conflicts with classic SEO. It is the same discipline, held to a stricter standard.

Be readable without JavaScript

Many crawlers and assistant fetchers do not execute client-side rendering, and those that do often give up early. If your pricing, service list and location only appear after hydration, they effectively do not exist.

Server-render the substance: headings, body copy, prices, service areas, FAQs. Keep pages fast and light — speed is both a ranking input and a crawl-budget input.

State facts, not adjectives

"Industry-leading solutions for forward-thinking companies" cannot be quoted by anything. "AI phone reception from $59 per month, answering 24/7, live in under a week, serving Canada and the United States" can.

Every important page should contain a compact set of plain factual statements: what the service does, who it is for, where it is available, what it costs, how long it takes, and what it integrates with.

Add structured data and keep details consistent

Inconsistency is the quiet killer: a different phone number in the footer than in your business profile makes an assistant less willing to assert anything about you.

  • Organization and LocalBusiness markup with the same name, phone numbers, email and social profiles used everywhere else
  • Service or Product markup on service pages, with offers where price is public
  • FAQPage markup for genuine questions, matching the visible text on the page
  • Article markup with dates and author on editorial content
  • BreadcrumbList so hierarchy is explicit

Publish answers, not brochures

Assistants reuse passages that answer a question completely in a few sentences. Structure content as questions people actually ask — "do we have to replace our phone system?", "how accurate is document extraction?" — and answer them directly in the first sentence, then elaborate.

Lists of concrete capabilities, prices and timeframes get quoted. Vision statements do not.

Give machines a map

  • A clean sitemap and a robots file that welcomes the crawlers you want
  • A plain-text summary file such as /llms.txt describing what the business does and where the key pages are
  • Stable URLs, canonical tags and permanent redirects when things move
  • Per-page summaries and key-fact blocks that state the essentials in one place

Then measure differently

Ranking reports do not capture assistant recommendations. Ask the assistants directly, on a schedule: what do they say about your category, your city, your competitors, and you? Track how the answer changes as you publish. Treat wrong facts about your business as bugs and fix them at the source.
